LAKE CHELAN AREA FISHING REPORT FOR 3/30/14

What continues hot is trolling in the early morning above the Yacht Club or along the face of Manson Bay on Lake Chelan for nice numbers of Lakers.

On Chelan, fish Colyar Ledge above the Yacht Club from the 240 foot contour out to 340 foot contour for best success early in the morning.  Also trolling the face of Manson Bay in depths of 180 to 265 feet has been very productive.  In both locations fish speeds of 1 to 1.5 mph as close to the bottom as you can.  Silver Horde’s Needlefish Squiddy’s rigged with a Mack’s Lures smile blade in Glow and baited with a triangle of Northern Pikeminnow has been the “go to” presentation.  Worden Lures T4 Flatfish in Purple Glow (GPLF) were also productive when trolled at about 1.5 mph.  Another effective option is Silver Horde’s Kingfisher Lite spoons in the 3” or 2” varieties.  Again, glow colors are best.

Your fishing tip of the week is to take measures to ensure that you are running your downrigger balls precisely where you think you are.  When fishing for kokanee or rainbow trout on Chelan it can be a challenge to make sure that your downrigger ball is where you want it to be.  The simplest solution is to aim your transducer so you pick up your ball.  The down side of that is that obliterates your ability to see smaller fish.  Jeff adds knots of orange line fixed to the cable with a dab of glue.  The downside is that eventually they do move around and you have to keep track of your increments by five.  When we run loads of cable we have to “zero” in the counters for depths less than a hundred vs depths greater than 200.  Sometimes you can trick yourself.  Pick a method that works for you and put that ball 2 feet above the fish you see on the sonar.

The kid’s tip of the week is to get them out over spring break either from the shore in Chelan or at Roses Lake for rainbow trout then go pick some wild asparagus.  Rainbows and asparagus are a spring tradition.

Your safety tip of the week is to check those lifejackets for winter wear.
